Innovative Business of the Year!
Eco-Groovy Deals was named "Business of the Year 2019" by the City Council of Arcata on Feb 23rd. Judging criteria included human resource goals, community support, collaboration with other businesses and organizations, environmental impact locally and globally plus the ability to respond to business challenges in creative and innovative ways.
We know that 2019 is old news...recently a City Council member told us that we set the bar very high. And after Covid hit, they didn't give the award for a few years. We decided to leave the old news on the site, because we loved being honored at the time. We have only gotten better at all the things that we were acknowledged for in 2019. The real honor is what we do every day and how much support we have received from the community that keeps us doing what we do. It means so much to hear the words of support from so many of you who shop with us.
For the past 15+ years, we have worked diligently and quietly behind the scenes to support Humboldt non-profits, churches and schools. Through our textile recycling services to these groups, we divert over 1.5 MILLION pounds a year of unwanted, non-sellable goods from local landfill. Nearly all the textiles are redistributed to folks worldwide or repurposed.
By sourcing & selling second hand better brands that Humboldt folks ask for the most, we fund our recycling service and have created 18 jobs. Eco-Groovy Deals is a profit sharing, community service focused business.
It is a "beautiful thing" to be recognized and honored with this award. Whether recognized or not, we are committed to do what it takes "to be the change we want to see in the world". Thank you for shopping with us!
We opened a CLEARANCE OUTLET !
We've been in Arcata for over 15 years, and on the Plaza for over 5 years. We kept hearing you say, "Do you have any budget furniture?" or "Where are your sale racks?"
We are committed to our Mission Statement: reduce landfill, create jobs and serve the community! We listen to the community. Many folks share their appreciation for our selection for better brands and popular styles in A grade condition. But, some members of the community are DIY folks. Some folks prefer deeper discounts on good quality but not so name brand, some even prefer low priced items that are a bit distressed.
We knew we could offer more, but the Plaza store is quite popular as it is! So, we found a location just 6 blocks away with plenty of easy parking. Its hard to make ends meet and pay folks decent wages when offering such low prices; there's no way The Outlet could survive as a stand alone store...but it is a great way to serve the needs of the community. We are willing to give it a try as long as we can meet basic expenses and not put payroll at risk. Our Plaza store really helps with payroll. So far, we are able to pay the additional costs of having this new Outlet location.
Its a fine line between balancing the realities of business in these Times and meeting the low price desire of Humboldt shoppers. No one wants crap for less. We all want the best for Less. We do our best to bring you the best we can find for a fair price. Some folks may only want to shop the Plaza store, others may prefer the Outlet...and some may like both! We hope this new store brings more joy to the Humboldt community!
